Reader Question - Who Will Take Down Norman Osborn?

Ever since the end of Secret Invasion and the beginning of Dark Reign, when Norman Osborn made his meteoric rise to power, people have been knowingly waiting for someone to take him down. Predictions have been very varied of when that will happen and who will be the one to topple Osborn, but with the announcement of the upcoming Siege, which we saw in the January solicits, we are starting to get a better of idea of how it will happen. Hit the jump for some more thoughts about the fall of Norman Osborn.

Self-Implosion

Like I said, since the beginning of Dark Reign, people knew it wouldn't last very long, and the reason is this: Norman Osborn is crazy. Remember how he killed Swordsman the same day he took control of H.A.M.M.E.R.? Or how he was recently shown, as seen in the Moments of the Week, beating the crap out of a mentally handicapped Tony Stark in front of TV cameras?

And that's without mentioning his little Goblin episode back in Thunderbolt Mountain, where he suited up as the Green Goblin and killed a bunch of people. So far Osborn has managed to play the media game in his favor, brushing away the concern over his mental health, but surely it will one day all come back to bite him in the ass, in a very public way.

Shady Associations

When Norman Osborn assembled The Cabal, he might as well have stabbed himself in the back. Put Emma Frost, Loki, Namor, and Doctor Doom in the same room, tell them to play nice, and they are going to do the exact opposite. Since the beginning, Namor and Doom have been plotting together, Namor and Emma as well, and Loki always has at least three plots to take over the world. Upcoming Siege covers seem to show that Doom is going to fight back against Osborn's rule, possibly Loki as well.

And let's not forget that Osborn has on his "side" the Dark Avengers, all former criminals, the Thunderbolts, a black ops assassin team, and The Hood's gang, all under his employ. Not exactly the most loyal allies you could find.

Everyone Hates Him

Sure, Osborn has plenty of allies, but he has made more enemies than anyone else in the Marvel Universe these days. It seems that just about every hero is aiming to bring him down in one way or the other: Nick Fury and his Secret Warriors, the New Avengers, Daredevil, the Punisher, the X-Men, and many, many others. If anything, one of their plans to bring him down will eventually work just by probability alone.

As an aside, many people seem to think that the return of Steve Rogers will be one of the pivotal events in bringing down Osborn, as his death at the end of Civil War was a pretty big part of the current status quo of the Marvel Universe. Others seem to think that Osborn is in power as a result of Spider-Man's deal with the devil during the events of One More Day. Both of them are interesting theories, and both have enough proof behind them to be seriously considered.

The Sum of All Elements

In the end, Osborn has so many balls in the air, that they are bound to all come down at the same time. The solicits of Siege point to the fact that Osborn is going to try to take over Asgard, in the process biting off more than he can possibly chew. But there surely has to be one key and main element that will bring his downfall. Will it be one of his psychotic events coming to light? Or Doom finally saying enough and kicking Osborn's ass? Or Spider-Man taking down his most intimate and personal enemy once and for all? So I ask you, dear readers, who or what do you think will finally take down Norman Osborn?

With all the crap Norman has put Spider-man through, it would be nice if he was the one to take him down.

Spider-man deserves to be the one to do it- but he would only stop him, not kill him.

If he's to be "killed", my guess is that Tony Stark does it.

I would want Captain America to do it but even i have to admit it would feel hollow to me. So, I'm going with a wild card. The Sentry.

Really now, Norman been pushing him around and among the Dark Avengers; he still somewhat of the nice guy still. Also, what could Norman do if The Sentry decides to go against him?

In a surprising crossover MacGuyver wll take him down with a cartridge of web fluid, three paperclips, a Captain America T-shirt, and six feet of duct tape.

(The issue will be drawn by Liefeld and written by Loeb BTW, so get your orders in now)

Xorn....or the equivalent. As much as I enjoy Bendis' writing (hey, his NEW AVENGERS got my fiance reading comics) he (more than often) drops the ball with an anti-climactic ending.

Now, I think it is worth it since I prefer the journey to the destination. After all, no matter how the story ends, the Marvel Universe is a fluid place and any conclusion can be discarded at any time in favor of new ideas.

Still, I do think that barring Norman's takedown by the Marvel Trinity of Cap, Iron Man and Thor, the conclusion to Norman's Reign will come out of left field. He will pull a Xorn.

My list for other people (besides self-destruction) taking Norman down would be something like:

1) Fury
2) Steve Rogers
3) Spiderman

Though like Servando Gomez said, the Sentry is a wild card. It's possible for any number of people to take him down, including himself.

Hmm, I wouldn't mind it if Nick Fury beats norman to gain control of Hammer. Also, I'm okay with Tony Stark beating Norman which in opinion makes the sense in the world. Tony power was basically usurped by Norman.

Also, i should recant my thing about the Sentry being the one to do it. Ugg, World War Hulk Ending comes to mind now. Dear lord, why would they think it even possible for hulk to draw with a guy with the power a million power suns.

Squirrel Girl, or the whole Avengers. Whichever seems more probable.

My heart is set on Spidey, but my head says good 'ol Cap will be the one to do it. But ya know, it was said that Spidey wouldn't kill Norman, but he DID make a deal with Mephisto. If we find out that Norman's rise to power was indeed a result of this deal, it could be that Spidey has to kill him, and that would be just one more consequence in dealing with Mephisto.

Klep said...

@Primewax - That would imply planning on the part of the Spidey "Brain" Trust, which we know is not one of their strengths.

The Avengers. Specifically, Captain America, Iron Man and Thor. We know Siege will reunite the three.

My guess is that Steve Rogers comes back and retakes the mantle of Captain America. He unites Thor, Iron Man, and the New Avengers (namely Spider-Man and Wolverine), and they lead the "siege" on Osborn's super-teams. Meanwhile Bucky-Cap, Black Widow, and Nick Fury are infiltrating and generally screwing over Hammer.

With his forces checked, Norman's sanity begins to crack. Sensing weakness, his allies pounce on him and he flips out, killing a lot of people and ultimately losing his credibility if not proving to be an outright criminal.

And the person to get the final blow that takes down Norman Osborn is none other than Aunt May.

Norman Osborn is dead since Amazing Spider-Man 122. All the rest is just a retcon caused by Mephisto. As soon as the good guys deal with that, an abrakadabra will fix everything.

I want to see it be Hank Pym. I want to see him show up at the climax after some all-out rumble when Norman Osborn is alone and kill him for taking advantage of his wife's death. It would be shocking considering his new kick as leader of the Mighty Avengers.

This is a great post, just the sort of thing that brings me to this site, thanks Matt. Now, ass-kissing aside.

I think Normal will implode on himself, the media will be there for it, as it's been for so much of his work, and it will set up a new status quo, one where the SRA is pertinent again and whoever is in charge will have a lot to do, probably not one person, it'll be a brain trust of Fury, Stark, etc almost Illuminati style, then they can wink and know the world is safe again, then all laugh at Lockjaw as he farts, a real Full House moment.

As for the actual final blow, I'd like to see Spider-Woman get it, that would be sweet justice, or Christmas, whatever.

PS I also just want to start telling people they "pulled a Xorn"...wonder if the kids in class today will get that?

I like Parallax's theory. It's left field, which is what we want, a new idea, a surprising enough idea, and it's possible that it could be handled in a way that feels significant, without resorting to the damaged cycle of dissolution and reformation.

Something that occurred to me is that Clint Barton is going to be the one to do it, wasn't he captured some time ago in one of The List one shots? No one seems to have done anything about that yet.

I think it will probably go a long way to try to redeem Clint after the hell Bendis has put him through, and it might appease some of the older Avengers fans that Bendis has managed to completely piss off in the last 5 or so years.

@Marcelo You're absolutely right. Haha!

I have a bad feeling that, no matter who takes Norman down, when the natural (heroic age) order is established, someone like Dr. Doom or Loki will be running things from behind the scenes.

Lee said...

I think it will be his son Harry. No hero is going to be able to take him down, so it has to be someone from the inside. Harry has plenty of reason to take down dear old dad, and I think he will.

Im pretty sure the Avengers List one shot is supposed to be after the current arc. And Im pretty sure that plot point is gonna be what the New Avengers annual is about

I'd want Spidey or Hank Pym's avengers to play a decent role but we all know it'll be Bendis Avengers, namely the trinity. shame but still

The one to finally take down Osborn will be something of a wild card, namely Gwen Stacy. Turns out she gave him a nasty case of vd during THAT episode. Parting comment in the $4.99 special: "You were a lousy lay, and I told you those weird green condoms you insisted on would break. Try throwing THIS off a bridge, Gobby! Oh, snap!"

I think self-destruction is going to contribute quite a bit, but Spider-Man had better freaking be a big part of taking Norman down. I've enjoyed Dark Reign quite a bit, but if Spidey isn't there doing a lot of it then the whole thing will largely be a waste as far as I'm concerned.

Wait, Wait; i just figured out. Being that the upcoming age is "The Heroic Age". It must mean one thing. A superhero like no other. A Hero that symbolizes that hopes and dreams of humanity.

It can be no other than: SUPERMAN And his RETCON PUNCH.

Kidding aside; I know that if i were the editorial department and it was 2012 (err whenever the family that own superman gets copyrights back); i would stage a comic book coup by paying the family to license superman to the marvel universe.

Then i would debut him at the end of SEIGE as the one Stopping Norman Osborn. It would be a COUP on Marvel part to do that against DC. Well, thats what i would do; continuity be damned.

On a more serious route; Maybe Marvelman (yes Alan Moore version) debuting in the Marvel universe saying "KIMOTA!!!!!" and then single handily take on the splinter CABAL might be nice.

Firstly, to Sm and others who bring up Xorn, remember that wasn't Bendis who did that piece of drek. That was all on the Sainted Grant Morrison. Now if you said 'Sally Floyd' or 'Yelena Bulova' then yeah that's on Bendis. LOL

Now great answers to this topic but I got 2 more possiblities to throw into the mix that everyone overlooks:

Ms Marvel (Moonstone): Let's see she has turned on in some way Baron Zemo, Hawkeye, Jolt, and Mach-1..and she LIKED / respected them. It clear she has NO respect for Osborn...

Ares: The cracks in the relationship are starting to appear. It obvious that Ares respects Osborn's position but how long until Osborn does something mad like, o try to kill Phobos in front of him in a state of madness until Ares separates Osborn's head from his shoulders? It has nearly happened once in Secret Warriors and you saw how Ares reacted...

Again...great job and ow.my head!

the only thing which could possibly end his reign is himself...believe me!! nobody can kill osborn.. even doctor doom and loki together cannot kill him..not that they don't have the firepower but bendis won't let that happen...like secret invasion all contributing factor will somehow affect his downfall....but i just cant see how "dark avengers" will be able to survive his downfall....

smkedtky said...

@DaryllB: Bendis did a follow up to HOUSE OF M, around NEW AVENGERS 16-20, that introduced the Collective (a sentient energy made up of all lost mutant powers) and Michael Pointer (of Omega Flight/Dark X-Men fame).

During that arc, it turns out, that all of the mutant energy lost during M-Day went to one source which was controlled by, none other than, XORN.

It was a strong story, which saw the New Avengers get their asses handed to them. It concluded on Genosha, as the Collective homed in on Magneto.

The mystery of the Collective ended with a full-on splash page featuring a re-powered Magneto who, upon discovering who was behind the Collective intelligence, shouted...

"XORN!"

It was a little anticlimactic...not to mention, out of left field.

....and that is where "Pulling a Xorn" comes from.

Daryll B. said...

OK...yeah I tuned that story out because it was ridiculous...I ws thinking you were refering to Magneto living under the yoke of the X-Men for months as Xorn. So I apologize

And so is the mistreatment of Alpha Flight in comics. The madness must end.

The Sentry could get mad at osborn and throw him into the sun.(tears of joy)

it would be pretty funny if Deadpool kills him. He is trying to be a hero, what better way than to kill Osborne? Plus if it wasn't for Deadpool Osborne wouldn't even of come into power. Would bring things full circle.

But Spidey or Tony do deserve to get their own back on Normie too.

Plus there is the possibility of Osborne snapping and going completely nuts on live TV or something.

I can see Zemo coming from the left field and tipping the balance, Fury and the secret warriors pounding the nails in the coffin, and right before the reformed Avengers are able to get him, Osborn does something incredibly stupid... like kill Victoria Hand on TV.
