Comic Book Review Power Rankings - 01/12/11 - 01/23/11

I owe a great big apology to all of the loyal Weekly Crisis readers. For the past three weeks, the Comic Book Review Power Rankings have been completely absent from our site as I took an unplanned sabbatical from writing reviews. Due to a number of outside commitments (including the launch of the Kickstarter campaign for Matinee Eclectica, my own self-published comic collection), I have been unable to review my comics for the last few weeks. As of today, though, I’m back in the game.

Since the recent blizzard that rocked the Midwest rendered me unable to pick up this week’s comics, today I’m going to take a look at the last three week’s comics in a quick rundown of how the last few weeks ranked. Later this week, I’ll drop the full reviews for this week’s haul. Hit the jump to see how I ranked the last three weeks worth of comics!

For the uninitiated, the Comic Book Review Power Rankings is a countdown from worst-to-best of my weekly comic book haul. Before reading the issues, I preRank them based on the creative team, previous issues, solicitations, and gut instinct. The final Ranking number is based upon how the issues actually turned out. I attempt to keep everything as spoiler free as possible, but keep in mind that there may be the occasional minor spoiler that I overlook. As always, I can be reached via responses to this thread or at

01. THOR: MIGHTY AVENGER #8 – Must Read
The bittersweet finale of this brilliant series shined in every aspect, just as all previous issues have.  Despite never graduating from "cult hit" to bestseller, this heartwarming and incredibly charming series is easily one of the most brilliant comics that Marvel has produced in the last several years.  Writer Roger Langridge and artist Chris Samnee hit all the right notes in this issue, perfectly capturing the immensity of Thor's power, the epic scope of his struggles, and the incredible humanity in his spirit.  If you've never given this series a chance, I absolutely beg you to pick it up in trade.  The series may be leaving us, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the best comics of the last decade.

09. WOLVERINE #9 – Byrne It
08. BATMAN #706 – Byrne It
06. THE SPIRIT #10 – Check It
04. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #652 – Buy It

01. GI JOE : COBRA #12 – Must Read
To say that GI: Joe Cobra #12 was a shocker is a complete understatement.  Since we are now two weeks past its release, I won't be spoiling anything when I say that this issue features the surprise murder of Cobra Commander by the undercover Chuckles, who proves his loyalty to the GI Joes by taking down the terrorist leader.  Writers Christos Gage and Mike Costa do a brilliant job of developing and maintaining tension throughout this issue before letting artist Antonio Fuso take the lead in a simple but shocking double-page spread revealing the death of the villain.  This issue effectively closes out the first two years of IDW's GI Joe relaunch and ushers in the next phase of the franchise.  Not only does this issue live up to the hype, it exceeds it.

12. X-MEN – AGE OF X: ALPHA – Byrne It
11. GREEN ARROW #8 – Byrne It
10. AVENGERS #9 – Check It
09. DETECTIVE COMICS #873 – Check It
08. WONDER WOMAN #606 – Buy It
05. X-23 #5 – Buy It
04. TEEN TITANS #91 – Buy It
03. ZATANNA #9 – Must Read
02. INCORRUPTIBLE #14 – Must Read

01. SKULLKICKERS #5 – Must Read
The ever-absurd Skullkickers closes out its first storyline with this issue, which plays up its quirky, campy humor while still delivering a strong action-oriented comic that is fast-paced, tightly plotted, and extremely charming.  Jim Zubkavich's clever approach and the high-energy art of Edwin Huang combine for this extremely unique issue that simply blew away every other comic on the stands this week.  This series is as well-crafted as it is simply insane, with this issue contiuing the winning ways of this surprise hit from Image Comics.
